Safety Guidelines Important in Both IndyCar and Shooting Sports

Shooting rangeShooting sports and IndyCar racing have a lot in common.  While the two may not sound at all similar, they both require a very high level of concentration, respect and etiquette among participants.

IndyCar drivers are maneuvering machines weighing over 1500 lbs at speeds exceeding 220 MPH, sometimes racing three wide as they jockey for position.  It takes a lot of respect for fellow drivers and trust in the fact that they know the rules and safe operation of their vehicle.  Should a driver fail to hold their racing line or make a dangerous decision during the race, the results can be deadly for both the driver and spectators at the event.

Similarly, shooters at a range are expected to know the safe operation of their firearms and conduct themselves within the bounds of accepted range etiquette.  Shooting at a range is a very safe activity as long as participants adhere to the safety guidelines set forth by the range.

Below are some general safety guidelines for shooting ranges

  • Range commands should be followed immediately.  Just like adherence to race control in IndyCar is vital, shooters need to follow the commands of range officials to ensure the safety of everyone around them.
  • Don’t interfere with other shooters.  Blocking  and dangerous driving can have dire consequences in IndyCar- distracting a shooter can be deadly if they are not able to concentrate as needed while shooting.
  • Don’t go forward until a cease fire has been called.  As with a caution light or closed pit areas keep drivers safe, a cease fire directive allows participants to know when it’s safe to change positions.
  • Know your equipment – In both racing and shooting it’s critical to understand the safe use of the equipment you’re operating.
