Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “the state of full physical, mental and emotional well-being with no limitations.” Various definitions have been utilized for various purposes over the years. One of these is “the quality of life achieved through the maintenance of optimal health for the person concerned and other members of his or her family.”
The process of defining health is a multi-step process that begins with an individual’s self-assessment. Factors that may be included in the definition of health to include physical and mental health, cognitive function, ability to engage in life and proper utilization of space, resources, time and resources, and one’s relation to the environment. Other determinants considered important in health promotion are demographics, social factors, environmental factors, and determinants of life expectancy. Other considerations made by researchers in the field of health include issues related to smoking and alcohol use, practices concerning physical education and behavior, weight and obesity, nutritional intake, history of diseases and avoidance of health risks, and one’s family health history. These factors are then put into categories and evaluated in relation to their association with health, quality of life, and mortality.
The process of defining health also involves the process of identifying, in a systematic way, the risk factors associated with ill health and diseases, and the public’s capacity to cope with, prevent, or treat them. The evaluation of these factors also includes studies on the relationship between environment, genes, and diseases. In this regard, health care planning refers to the identification of needs and the creation of health care plans based on the known determinants of illness and disease.
As we know, health is considered to be the result of a combination of several factors that affect a person’s physical and mental state. Thus, poor health usually leads to poor health, while healthy people are usually viewed as strong and robust. Health concept has been developed over the years to provide individuals with an idea of their general health, based on their physical attributes. Generally, it is seen that good health depends on the balanced combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise, regular exposure to sunlight, and a reasonable amount of sleep. Developing good habits and modifying behavior can go a long way toward improving overall health.
A good health definition always includes some way of measuring the physical and mental condition of an individual. A physical assessment includes knowing the total area where a person’s body is, including all its organs and tissues. A mental assessment includes knowing ones mental health through the use of standard psychological tests like the questionnaire, the mini-mental test, and the mental state test. An accurate definition of good health should take into account the inter-relatedness of the physical and mental aspects of the person.
Developing a set of standards for defining good health has become a necessary part of medical research and practice. Currently, there are five major factors considered vital to determining the overall health status of an individual. These factors are: physical health, mental health, family history of any chronic illness, psychological health, and environmental factors. All the five factors are inter-related and work together to determine the overall condition of an individual.
