The Different Types Of Sports

Sports (or sports) involves any form of generally competitive physical activity that, through organised or casual competition, aim to utilize, develop or improve certain physical skill and/or ability while also providing entertainment for participants, and sometimes, spectators. Such activities may include games, competitions, athletic events, outdoor sports and more. Amongst the most popular are American football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf and soccer. In North America, the most popular form of sports competition is basketball, with the English based game of soccer following close behind. In Europe, most popular sports include skiing, hockey, cricket and the Olympic sport of fencing.

One of the most common ways people take part in sports activities is by competing actively or joining in organized sports competitions; these vary from national, regional, club or international in nature and may last for short periods of time or for long periods of time. For example, Olympic sports take several months to complete and therefore, it can be difficult for a wider audience to keep track of the ongoing events. In contrast, spectator sports allow the participant to either watch or follow the action on an smaller scale, usually with the help of a media outlet or even online. There are also sports that can be enjoyed by individuals without the need of participating in an official competition. For example, paintball is a version of paintball war gaming.

Each type of sports has its own unique set of requirements and its own set of rules and regulations. There are sports that are non-contact and involve only contact, such as gymnastics, figure skating, swimming, surfing, bobsled racing and cycling. In these activities, the participant is not wearing any protective equipment, such as shin guards, helmets or pads.
